Software Engineer, R2 Gateway - Cloudflare

About the Role

R2 is Cloudflare's object storage platform, offering developers durable, reliable storage with zero egress fees. The R2 Gateway team owns the request-facing layer—the S3-compatible API gateway that handles every object put, get, list, and delete operation.

As a member of this team, you will work at the intersection of large-scale distributed systems, storage infrastructure, and edge computing, ensuring the gateway remains fast, correct, and highly available at global scale.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and operate the S3-compatible API gateway.
• Build and operate production services on Cloudflare Workers and Kubernetes.
• Own the request path end-to-end, including authentication, authorization, routing, rate limiting, and error handling.
• Manage projects from design docs through implementation, testing, deployment, and monitoring.
• Improve reliability, performance, and observability while reducing operational toil.
• Participate in on-call rotations and drive incident resolution.
• Leverage AI tools to accelerate development, debugging, and operational workflows.
• Collaborate across storage, metadata, and networking teams.

Desirable Skills

• Strong programming skills in Rust, TypeScript, Go, or similar languages.
• 3-4 years of experience building or operating large-scale distributed systems.
• Familiarity with cloud infrastructure, object storage, HTTP/API gateways, or edge computing.
• Experience designing high-throughput APIs and managing backward-compatible API evolution.
• Strong understanding of reliability, monitoring, alerting, and performance tuning.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience with S3 API, Cloudflare Workers, or Durable Objects is a strong plus.
