About the Role
At Todoist, our mission is to empower people with simple yet powerful tools.
We're a multidisciplinary, fully-remote team passionate about creating products, like Todoist and Comms, that improve people's lives. We thrive on innovating new solutions to old productivity challenges and seek to rethink how productivity tools are made.
Our Core Values
- Ambition: You aspire to put a dent in the universe. You set high standards for yourself and those around you. You solve issues that have a high impact on our customers and our company.
- Mastery: You care deeply about the quality of your work. You're continuously learning and pushing yourself to the limits of your ability. As a champion of your craft, you are also a champion of your well-being – you work intensely, then disconnect completely.
- Independence: Others can trust that you'll deliver on time. You keep your word and trust your teammates to do the same. You are proactive, take ownership, and remain accountable with little or no direction.
- Communication: Your communication is clear, concise, and engaging. You keep others in the loop and never go radio silent. You speak respectfully and foster warm relationships through your interactions. You're culturally and socially aware and can appropriately navigate social situations.
Your Team & Role
Todoist is a fully-remote company of about 100 people across more than 30 countries. We've been profitable and self-funded since 2007, growing without outside investors. That shapes how we work: small teams, long time horizons, and a preference for clarity over process.
This is our first in-house legal role. Today we work with outside counsel case by case, but you'll take full DRI ownership of legal at Todoist: bringing that work in-house and shaping how we handle it going forward.
You'll report to our Head of Finance and collaborate across every function: Product and Engineering on privacy and data protection, People on employment questions across our distributed team, and Marketing on brand, content, and trademark. The work spans commercial contracts, employment, privacy and GDPR, IP, litigation, and cross-jurisdictional questions.
A typical week might include reviewing and negotiating customer and vendor agreements, answering questions from teammates who need practical trade-off analysis, updating policies, and managing relationships with specialized external counsel.
About You
- Substantial legal experience, ideally including general counsel work at a global company, and licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. state (any state works). You can live anywhere in the world, but our company is legally registered in the U.S.
- Proven expertise in at least two legal domains, ideally commercial alongside privacy or litigation, and eager to widen that range
- Comfortable across a broad set of matters: commercial contracts, privacy and data protection, employment, IP, and litigation
- Working knowledge of data protection regimes such as GDPR, and how they apply to a consumer software product
- Experience supporting a tech or SaaS company; remote experience is a plus
- Clear written communication for non-lawyers
- Comfortable as the only lawyer in the room, ready to own complex matters end-to-end and build processes from the ground up
- Pragmatic and solutions-oriented guidance that helps teams balance tradeoffs
- Comfortable collaborating across time zones and cultures in an asynchronous environment
- Excited to use AI tools in your work on a regular basis
