Senior Java Engineer - Distributed Systems, Serverless - Elasticsearch

About the Role

Elastic is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our Elasticsearch Distributed Systems team. You will focus on the scalability, performance, and resilience of our Serverless offering, tackling complex challenges in node communication, data indexing, and cluster management.

What You Will Be Doing

• Leverage distributed systems expertise to build and operate core components of our next-generation Serverless Elasticsearch.
• Improve components supporting concurrent and consistent indexing across multiple machines.
• Maintain cluster coordination systems to ensure high performance and safety during node churn and data movement.
• Push the limits of Elasticsearch regarding shard counts, node capacity, and petabyte-scale data handling.
• Investigate and resolve complex performance and concurrency issues.
• Provide high-level support for critical engineering problems and own operational investigations end-to-end.

What You Bring

• Deep background in distributed systems and consensus algorithms.
• Strong proficiency in core Java, including standard library data structures, concurrency constructs, and modern language features.
• Deep technical proficiency in algorithms.
• Proven ability to build and debug features for highly distributed systems from the ground up.
• Experience owning projects from technical design through to development and deployment.
• Track record of using AI to accelerate development and debug complex systems.
• Ability to work autonomously and drive results in a distributed, asynchronous team environment.

Bonus Points

• Experience with data stores, search, analytics, or Lucene.
• Strong knowledge of the JDK.
• Familiarity with asynchronous event-driven network frameworks like Netty.
