Senior Software Developer - Query Engine, Database Internals

About the Role

Elastic is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join the Elasticsearch Analytical Engine team. This globally-distributed, remote team is responsible for building new analytics capabilities in Elasticsearch’s latest aggregation framework, powered by the ES|QL query language.

What You Will Be Doing

• Core Development: Contribute to the Elasticsearch codebase, building data-intensive features and resolving complex bugs.
• System Design: Research and implement efficient data structures and algorithms; work close to the hardware and OS level when necessary.
• Collaboration: Work with cross-functional teams, including UI and solution engineers, to ensure a seamless user experience.
• Mentorship: Act as an expert in Elasticsearch internals, providing guidance to team members and the open-source community.
• Modern Java: Write idiomatic, modern Java code (99.8% of the codebase).

What You Bring

• Strong proficiency in core Java, including data structures, concurrency, and modern features like lambdas.
• Experience with software systems engineering and a passion for performance optimization.
• Ability to work autonomously, driving projects from technical design to completion.
• Experience with data storage technologies (e.g., Elasticsearch, Solr, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Cassandra).
• Excellent communication skills, with a proven ability to collaborate asynchronously in a distributed environment.
• A track record of using AI to accelerate development and debug complex systems.

Bonus Points

• Prior experience building with Elasticsearch or working in the search/information retrieval space.
• Experience building data analytics capabilities or working on data storage internals.
• Background in open-source contribution and CI/CD workflows.
