About the Role
At GitLab, People technology never stands still, and as a People Systems Engineer, you’ll build what keeps it moving. Reporting to the Senior Director, People Technology, and working alongside our Lead People Systems Engineer, you’ll design, build, and maintain the automations, integrations, and AI-powered workflows that connect Workday, Greenhouse, Slack, and the tools that power our global workforce.
You’ll own features from request through tested code, deployment, and ongoing reliability across Workato, Google Cloud, and Claude. With an AI-forward mindset, you’ll rethink how People work gets done, eliminating manual effort and creating streamlined, delightful experiences for team members.
What You'll Do
- Build, test, and maintain People system automations and integrations across Workato, Google Cloud Platform, Claude, Workday, Greenhouse, and GitLab, owning your features from design through deployment.
- Develop integrations between Workday, Greenhouse, Slack, and internal tools using Workday Web Services (WWS) and Slack’s API and Bot SDK, building Slack apps and bots that automate workflows for team members globally.
- Write clean, readable automation code in Ruby or a comparable scripting language, stored and versioned in GitLab, with clear documentation and peer code reviews.
- Monitor integration health, troubleshoot failures quickly, and resolve root causes to ensure automations remain reliable at scale.
- Ship changes safely through GitLab CI/CD pipelines, following testing, change-management, and Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) IT general controls (ITGC) standards.
- Lead with AI: utilize AI tools, large language models (LLMs), and Model Context Protocol (MCP) frameworks (including Claude) daily to accelerate development, prototype AI agents, and streamline workflows.
- Recommend and build durable, scalable solutions by partnering with People Technology Analysts on configuration, testing, and releases, as well as Information Security, IT, and AI Engineering on security and standards.
- Raise the bar for automation architecture, documentation, and maintenance alongside the Lead People Systems Engineer.
What You'll Bring
- Hands-on experience building automations or integrations, ideally with HR or business systems.
- Experience writing and maintaining code in Ruby or a comparable scripting language (e.g., Python, JavaScript), and willingness to learn Ruby.
- Hands-on experience with Workato or an equivalent integration platform as a service (iPaaS) in a production environment.
- Experience working with APIs and web services (REST and SOAP) and understanding data movement between systems.
- Proficiency with Git for version control and code review; treating automation code like production software.
- An AI-forward mindset: regular use of AI tools to automate tasks, speed up development, and improve processes.
- Ability to work independently in an all-remote, asynchronous environment, taking ownership of code quality, reliable outcomes, and user experience while handling confidential information responsibly.
- Additional relevant (non-required) experience: Workday integrations (WWS, RaaS, Workday Studio), Slack apps/bots, CI/CD pipelines, GCP/AWS, Docker/Kubernetes, LLM/MCP frameworks, or SOX ITGC controls.
