Overview
Growth Marketing is the activation and delivery arm of GitLab marketing: campaigns, regional and field marketing, lifecycle and product-led growth, marketing engineering and operations, corporate events including Transcend, partner marketing, community programs, and Co-Create. The team is accountable for pipeline, first orders, Flex conversion and expansion, and post-sale adoption.
As Principal Growth Marketing Strategist, you work directly with the VP of Growth Marketing as a strategic partner and operator. You hold the complete picture of the growth engine: department goals, budget allocation, cross-functional strategic projects, and key pending decisions. You keep that picture current, act on it when the VP is engaged elsewhere, and move work faster.
This is an individual contributor role at the Principal level. You manage outcomes across ten functions through influence, judgment, and follow-through.
What You'll Do
- Run Growth Marketing's operating rhythm: goals, business reviews, planning cycles, and metrics inspection behind them so decisions get made, recorded, and executed.
- Track commitments across the leadership team between their 1:1s with the VP so conversations remain focused on strategy rather than status.
- Own strategic projects that span multiple functions: scope them, assign ownership or lead them directly, and deliver results.
- Hold the overall budget picture across the team, prepare trade-off recommendations, and act within delegated authority.
- Represent Growth Marketing on the VP's behalf in pipeline reviews, cross-functional planning, and partner conversations.
- Unblock functional leaders when the VP is engaged elsewhere or stage issues to resolve efficiently.
- Act as an accessible thinking partner to functional leaders across the department.
- Partner with marketing's AI Transformation Owner to make AI adoption across Growth Marketing visible, measured, and continuously advancing.
- Prepare the VP for high-stakes moments: executive updates, leadership material, keynotes, and customer or partner meetings.
What You'll Bring
- Extensive senior leadership experience in B2B software marketing, having owned a marketing function, large program budget, or go-to-market motion with direct pipeline or revenue accountability.
- Broad marketing expertise across demand and digital, field and events, lifecycle/PLG, partner marketing, and marketing operations.
- A proven track record of landing complex cross-functional projects through influence rather than direct authority.
- Strong business fluency: ability to analyze P&Ls, pipeline reports, and budget models, with a clear understanding of consumption and subscription business models.
- Program management and operating rhythm experience (goal frameworks, QBRs, planning cycles) executed with discipline.
- Hands-on AI fluency: daily usage of AI tools, experience building or configuring AI workflows, and curiosity regarding AI's operational impact on marketing.
- Executive-level communication skills (concise writing, clear verbal briefs, and executive presence).
- High discretion in handling confidential financial, strategy, and personnel information.
- Familiarity with developer, DevOps, or platform engineering audiences (or the ability to learn quickly).
- Ability to travel occasionally for key events and leadership offsites.
