About the Role
GitLab is seeking a Senior Software Security Engineer to join our Trust and Safety team. You will engineer security improvements to the GitLab product and build tools to detect and prevent abuse on our SaaS platforms. While this is a security-focused role, a strong software engineering background—specifically with large Ruby/Rails codebases—is required. Formal security experience is not a hard requirement.
What You’ll Do
- Abuse Prevention: Maintain core systems and build new detection rules to combat spam, AI/token abuse, and financially motivated campaigns.
- Platform Maintenance: Serve as a core maintainer for our in-house Ruby on Rails abuse platform.
- AI Integration: Improve agentic AI capabilities in our mitigation tools to reduce human-in-the-loop operational load.
- Collaboration: Lead safety improvements across peer engineering teams and resolve automation gaps.
- Documentation: Create and maintain technical runbooks and procedures.
What You’ll Bring
- Technical Expertise: Strong software development skills with Ruby/Rails and experience in cloud-native development (GCP and/or AWS).
- Security Mindset: An "automation first" approach and an interest in "thinking like a hacker" to defend against platform abuse.
- Distributed Experience: Experience working on distributed applications with large codebases.
- AI Proficiency: Experience working on AI-native teams, maintaining agentic workflows, and performing code reviews.
- Remote Collaboration: Ability to thrive in an all-remote environment where impact is prioritized over hours worked.
