Senior Backend Engineer - Databases - Loki Query

The Opportunity

Grafana Cloud is our composable observability platform that integrates metrics, logs, and traces. We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join our Databases team, which owns core projects including Mimir, Loki, Tempo, and Pyroscope.

Our databases are open-source distributed systems implemented in Go, running on Kubernetes across major cloud providers. You will work in a remote-first, global environment that values autonomy, transparency, and pragmatic AI-assisted development.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Influence the product roadmap and define your own career objectives.
• Deliver new features and iterate based on performance and customer feedback.
• Drive projects from initial ideation through to production operations.
• Design, build, and maintain critical systems, ensuring high reliability and performance.
• Participate in on-call rotations for the services you own.
• Collaborate with the team on design discussions and code reviews.

Requirements

• Solid experience with at least one programming language (Go preferred; Python, C, C++, or Rust are also highly relevant).
• Proven ability to deliver projects from requirements gathering to shipping in a self-driven manner.
• Experience developing software for the Cloud or systems engineering.
• Ability to write clean, robust, and performant software that is easily maintained by others.

Bonus Points

• Experience with Kubernetes and/or Docker.
• Operational experience with Grafana and Prometheus.
• Exposure to microservices architecture and distributed systems.
• Familiarity with SRE tasks, on-call rotations, or infrastructure as code.
