Software Engineer - Platform Metal

The Opportunity

Grafana Labs is building a new Foundation’s “Metal” squad responsible for provisioning resources—including storage, networking, and Kubernetes clusters—outside of public cloud environments, starting with our own physical hardware. You will help build a Kubernetes control plane and manage the underlying infrastructure to support our rapidly scaling observability platform.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Infrastructure Management: Oversee the physical “Metal” environment from bare metal to Kubernetes.
• Networking: Manage cluster networking components, including load balancing, NAT, DNS, CNIs, cross-cluster communication, and routing protocols.
• Orchestration: Manage scheduling and autoscaling configurations.
• Tooling: Maintain Crossplane compositions and Terraform modules for CSP resources; manage versioning and compatibility.
• Collaboration: Work closely with Grafana Cloud application teams to ensure the platform meets their evolving needs.

What Makes You a Great Fit

• Remote Collaboration: You are comfortable working in a distributed, remote-first environment and value consensus-based decision-making.
• Technical Depth: Experience with distributed systems and a holistic approach to development (writing design docs, developer feedback, and integration testing).
• Operational Mindset: Experience operating your own code and participating in on-call rotations.
• Tech Stack: Proficiency in Go, Python, and Shell.
• Domain Knowledge: Experience with datacenter operations.

Bonus Points

• Experience with Cluster-API, Tinkerbell, Talos, or Ceph.
• Familiarity with Kubernetes scheduling (e.g., Karpenter).
• Experience with Tanka, Jsonnet, or managing workloads on AWS, GCP, or Azure.
• Background in open-source or community-based projects.
