Staff Backend Engineer - Grafana App Platform

The Opportunity

As our Cloud and Grafana-as-a-service business grows, we are evolving Grafana's core architecture to be fully multi-tenant, scalable, and a robust platform for our opinionated Cloud apps. We are looking for a Staff Backend Engineer to help transform Grafana into a comprehensive observability app platform where OSS and proprietary apps can integrate seamlessly with dashboards, alerts, and telemetry.

What You’ll Be Doing

• System Architecture: Refactor core Grafana components to be simpler and standardized, ensuring safe rollouts to avoid service disruptions.
• Development: Code new features, enhance operational experiences, and iteratively improve systems based on production insights.
• Technical Leadership: Author and review design documents, shape the product roadmap, and mentor team members.
• Collaboration: Work across squads and with external stakeholders to align technical plans.
• On-Call: Participate in weekday (12h x 5d) and weekend (24h x 2d) on-call rotations.
• AI-Assisted Workflow: Utilize modern AI coding assistants (with company-funded budgets) for prototyping, test generation, and refactoring.

• Operational Experience: Strong coding skills with a history of operating the software you build.
• Distributed Systems: Proven experience with SaaS platforms, including scalability, multi-tenancy, data isolation, and high availability (HA).
• Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to express ideas clearly and collaborate across teams.
• Pragmatism: Ability to handle ambiguity and prioritize progress over perfection.
• Tech Stack: Proficiency in Golang or a strong desire to learn it.
