Senior Developer - Platform (Developer Operations)

About the Role

Jane App's product development organization has grown significantly, from 250 to almost 500 staff in two and a half years, with roughly 350 shipping software daily using GitHub, Jira, AWS, and more. This rapid growth has outpaced the ad-hoc administration of these critical platforms. The Developer Operations team is being formed to shape the developer experience through settings, security, governance, and implementation within these tools.

As a foundational builder in this new Developer Operations team, you will initially own GitHub end-to-end. This involves driving a more mature baseline, automating its configuration, rolling it out, and supporting teams. The goal is to make these tools genuinely delightful to use, ensuring the secure path is also the easy, default path. A concrete target is to achieve compliance with a defined operational and security baseline for every repository at Jane within twelve months. Beyond GitHub, this role will expand to administer and integrate all key tools in our SDLC, and introduce new ones as needed.

You will operate with significant independence, supported by working groups that have already established baseline requirements. You'll collaborate with partners in Security, Delivery Engineering, Backend Foundations, and Developer Acceleration to translate their guidance into reality. This role offers the opportunity to shape how this new team functions from its inception, significantly impacting the day-to-day lives of over 300 developers by improving their experience with essential platforms.

What You'll Impact

  • Accountable Owner of GitHub at Jane: Take ownership of GitHub across multiple organizations, 900+ repositories, and 300+ developers. Define the operational and security baseline, establish what "good" looks like, and serve as the primary escalation point.
  • Collaborate to Build the Golden Path: Design and implement configurations for repository creation, branch protections, rulesets, required reviews, secret scanning, and least-privilege access. Ensure teams get the correct setup by default, reducing the need for manual configuration or reliance on documentation.
  • Automate Compliance: Implement configuration drift detection, compliance reporting, and guided enforcement through bots and dashboards. Partner closely with Platform Security teams on access controls, secret management, and effective alerting.
  • Lead Change Management: Drive the adoption of new GitHub workflows collaboratively across the organization. Manage a phased rollout to achieve 100% repository compliance within twelve months, providing hands-on migration support where necessary.
  • Prove the Model, Then Extend It: Apply successful strategies from GitHub to other SDLC tools like Jira, Datadog, and JFrog, and help define the operating model for the growing Developer Operations team.

What We're Looking For

  • Hands-on Administration of Developer Tooling at Organizational Scale: A systems administrator profile with a DevOps/DevEx focus. Experience owning platforms that other engineers depend on, whether managed SaaS or self-hosted. This includes practical GitHub administration: org and enterprise settings, rulesets, branch protections, GitHub Apps/integrations, Actions, SSO/SCIM, access management, secret scanning, code security, and audit logs.
  • Configuration as Code: Proficiency with Terraform, the GitHub API, and scripting (Bash, Python, TypeScript, or similar) for automating configuration, drift detection, and reporting. Comfort hosting and running tools in AWS, ideally including EKS.
  • A Security-First Instinct: A default approach of least privilege, sound secret management, and a track record of effective collaboration with security teams.
  • Autonomy and Consultative Skill: Ability to define baselines rather than waiting for them, comfortable with ambiguity, and capable of influencing hundreds of developers to adopt new standards collaboratively.
  • Fluency with AI Coding Tools: Experience directing AI agents (e.g., Claude, Cursor) for automation, reporting, and migration tasks, while maintaining responsibility for correctness and managing potential impact.

If you don't meet every single qualification but are excited about this role, we'd still love to hear from you.
