Controller - Nous Research

As Controller at Nous Research, you’ll own accounting and help build the in-house finance function behind our AI models, infrastructure, and products. You’ll work directly with the Head of Finance to establish the systems, reporting, and financial discipline that support the business as it grows.

As one of two people on the finance team, you’ll combine hands-on accounting ownership with a meaningful role in financial and operating decisions. You’ll also partner with Product and Engineering to inform product strategy, pricing, and business models.

Responsibilities

• Partner with the Head of Finance on budgets, forecasts, cash planning, and runway, translating financial and operating data into clear decisions.
• Help shape product strategy, pricing, and packaging through analysis of revenue, usage, costs, and margins.
• Build practical processes, reporting, and controls that enable a lean finance team to operate independently.
• Improve and automate workflows across accounting, billing, spend management, and product systems, and lead the transition from outsourced support.
• Own the financial close, financial statements, balance sheet reconciliations, and supporting schedules under US GAAP.
• Deliver timely management reporting and resolve technical accounting issues with appropriate support from external advisors.
• Own revenue recognition for subscriptions, usage-based products, customer credits, and enterprise contracts.
• Maintain deferred revenue schedules and reconcile billing, payments, product data, and the general ledger, partnering with Engineering to resolve exceptions.
• Own accounting for financing rounds and equity compensation, including transaction costs and supporting documentation, and reconcile equity records to the cap table with Legal and external advisors.
• Support capital raises through financial models, investor diligence, data-room materials, and closing schedules alongside the Head of Finance.
• Own accounts payable, accounts receivable, invoicing, reimbursements, payment preparation, cash monitoring, and payroll coordination.
• Establish clear approval workflows and payment controls that keep day-to-day finance operations efficient.
• Lead audit preparation and coordinate tax, payroll, and statutory compliance with external specialists.
• Maintain accounting policies, supporting documentation, and controls appropriate for the company’s stage.

Qualifications

• CPA required.
• 6+ years of accounting and finance experience, including experience as a Controller or Assistant Controller at a technology company.
• Hands-on ownership of the financial close, US GAAP reporting, reconciliations, and audit preparation.
• Strong technical accounting judgment and the ability to explain financial implications clearly to non-finance partners.
• Strong spreadsheet and financial modeling skills, with experience using QuickBooks, Stripe, Ramp, or comparable systems.
• Willingness to own day-to-day accounting while helping build the broader finance function.

Preferred

• Experience with ASC 606, deferred revenue, customer credits, or subscription and usage-based business models.
• Experience with venture-backed companies, equity and financing accounting, and capital raise support.
• Experience building processes and integrating financial data across systems in a lean finance team.
