About the Role
Spellbook is seeking a generalist Platform and Infrastructure Engineer to join our team. In this role, you'll work across our entire technical stack—from infrastructure (AWS, MongoDB, Infrastructure as Code, Datadog, CI/CD) to platform capabilities that enable product development and system reliability. You'll be instrumental in building the technical foundations that enable Spellbook to scale and deliver magical experiences to our customers.
As a Platform and Infrastructure Engineer, you'll be a critical member of our growing engineering team of 20 developers. You'll focus on three key areas:
- Building technology foundations: Own and evolve foundational platform systems (e.g., identity and access, core data models, and internal platform capabilities).
- Maintaining world-class quality: Drive toward 99.5% service levels through improved monitoring, observability, and reliability practices. Establish QA foundations and development best practices.
- Enabling development velocity: Reduce friction in our dev environment and CI/CD pipeline. Introduce productivity metrics and tooling improvements that help our team move with high speed.
Responsibilities
- Infrastructure management and optimization (AWS, MongoDB, Infrastructure as Code)
- Platform capabilities including authentication, authorization, entitlement, and AI inference
- CI/CD pipeline improvements and build tooling
- Worker queue management (BullMQ) and API development (tRPC)
- Developer experience improvements and tooling
- Monitoring and observability setup (Datadog)
- Service reliability and performance optimization

Required Experience
- Strong experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred)
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code and CI/CD systems
- Proficiency with databases, particularly MongoDB or similar NoSQL databases
- Experience with monitoring and observability tools
- Solid understanding of authentication, authorization, and security best practices
- Experience with Node.js/TypeScript backend systems
- Track record of improving developer productivity and experience
Nice to Haves
- Experience with TypeScript and modern JavaScript build tooling (Vite, esbuild, swc)
- Experience with BullMQ or similar job queue systems
- Experience with tRPC or similar type-safe API frameworks
- Experience working in fast-growing startups or scale-ups
