About the Role

We are looking for a people-first, technical Engineering Manager to join our team. You’ll lead technical projects from inception to launch, working with cross-functional stakeholders to proactively prioritize and solve common pain points for our customers.

You will help support the strategic technical direction of Spellbook’s product and key features by defining technical vision and building alignment across teams on complex issues aligned with Engineering OKRs. In addition, you will manage a team of up to 8 software engineers across various key product pillars, providing coaching, mentorship, and performance management to uphold technical quality and best practices.

Responsibilities

  • Coach and mentor software engineers to support career growth, providing timely feedback and regular 1:1s.
  • Complete annual performance reviews for direct reports and manage performance across the team.
  • Oversee technical projects from start to finish, collaborating with cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Contribute to technical direction by defining technical vision and setting Engineering OKRs.
  • Design, architect, and implement new features across the Spellbook application.
  • Scope complex tasks, coordinate team delivery, and proactively unblock technical challenges.
  • Leverage large language models (LLMs) from OpenAI, Anthropic, and other providers to build and improve product capabilities.
  • Collaborate with product management on React application enhancements to optimize customer experience.
  • Improve Express and tRPC-based APIs, performance, reliability, and bug resolution.
  • Support hiring, interviewing, and onboarding new engineering team members.
  • Build and maintain infrastructure in Amazon Web Services (AWS) using AWS Cloud Development Kit (CDK).
  • Conduct code reviews, establish engineering best practices, and maintain technical documentation in GitHub and Notion.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of software development experience.
  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to advocate technical ideas across diverse audiences.
  • Proven track record of taking features from abstract concepts to production-ready deployments.
  • Strong project management skills, managing multiple initiatives and engaging cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Solid experience in people management, technical mentorship, and delivering constructive feedback.
  • Experience establishing technical direction to mature and scale engineering organizations.
  • Deep understanding of core software development principles and computer engineering fundamentals.
  • Ability to break down ambiguous requirements into actionable plans and deliver features quickly.

Nice to Haves

  • Experience with TypeScript.
  • Familiarity with modern JavaScript build tools (e.g., Vite, esbuild, swc).
  • Prior experience in fast-paced startup environments.
  • Experience designing and building AWS infrastructure with CDK.
  • Hands-on experience working with LLMs, prompt engineering, and agent orchestration.
