Head of Marketing

Reports to: Senior Director of External Communications

The Wikimedia Foundation is seeking an experienced Head of Marketing to establish and oversee a new function responsible for product and integrated marketing. This is a unique opportunity to build a product marketing capability from the ground up within the non-profit organization that hosts Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects.

This senior manager-level role, positioned within the External Communications team, will collaborate with stakeholders to shape the go-to-market approach, focusing primarily on readers while also developing a unified view of audience engagement across all external audiences.

This role is remote and open to candidates across UTC+2 to UTC-4 (Central European through Eastern Time). Flexibility outside standard hours should be expected.

Key Responsibilities:

Product Marketing Leadership

  • Establish product marketing as an emerging function, developing processes and go-to-market strategies.
  • Recruit and lead product marketing team members, ensuring strategic alignment.
  • Coordinate with Foundation departments for a shared approach to external audience engagement and campaign planning.
  • Integrate retention and lifetime-engagement strategies into product marketing planning.
  • Develop product marketing metrics focusing on audience growth, campaign impact, adoption/retention, brand awareness, and GTM process.
  • Cultivate commercial judgment to identify and prioritize market needs, balancing them with product features.

Brand and Channel Marketing

  • Partner with Brand Studio and Brand Management for a shared global brand marketing approach.
  • Line-manage team members responsible for integrated and performance marketing, including paid media and owned digital experiences.
  • Collaborate on developing marketing briefs, staffing projects, and creating campaigns to grow global brand visibility, likeability, and awareness.
  • Ensure strategic alignment between product marketing briefs and the wider marketing and communications team.
  • Oversee the development and execution of web, SEO/GEO, and app store strategies as core organic growth channels.
  • Architect and oversee marketing technology and tooling decisions, ensuring seamless data integration.
  • Stay abreast of marketing trends, platform shifts, emerging channels, and tools.

Team Leadership

  • Lead and line-manage a multidisciplinary marketing team.
  • Actively manage priorities across product marketing and integrated marketing.
  • Oversee relationships with external agencies.

Skills and Experience:

  • 12+ years of marketing experience, with at least 5 years in B2C product marketing.
  • Proven experience line-managing multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Experience at a major website, online publisher/platform, growing and engaging global audiences at scale.
  • Expertise in building product messaging and value propositions, with global audience segmentation and lifecycle marketing experience.
  • Ability to adapt tone, voice, and message across different cultural contexts.
  • Experience in agile, fast-paced, complex, and ambiguous marketing environments, balancing hands-on and strategic approaches.
  • Proven ability to lead through influence and collaboration to drive alignment.
  • Experience developing and overseeing a multichannel strategy (paid, owned, earned media).
  • Ability to operate as a peer with internal stakeholders.
  • Experience with campaign analytics and translating data into strategic decisions.
  • Direct experience evaluating or implementing marketing technology (CRM, audience/campaign data platforms).
  • Experience working remotely across multiple time zones and emerging markets, including leading a distributed team.
  • Budget management experience.

Salaries are competitive, equitable, and consistent with our values. The anticipated annual pay range for this position within the United States is US$143,478 to US$217,585. Pay will be adjusted for applicants located outside the US based on the country of hire. Compensation is based on skills, experience, and location.
