Hi 👋🏾 I’m Abhik, Ashby's Co-Founder and VP of Engineering. This role is close to my heart because, as someone who can both design and code, it’s where I’ve always done my best work. We are doubling our Design Engineer team from five to over ten in the next year.
This role truly expects you to design and code. Combining excellence in both is where magic happens. UX and UI design often influence the data model's design and flexibility, while an understanding of technology capabilities simplifies and improves the design.
What You’ll Do
- Work on our most challenging design problems, help others improve their designs by expanding and enhancing our in-house design system, and consult on bespoke design work needed by Product Engineers.
- Redesigned our mobile web app by talking with customers, wireframing new flows, implementing its design system, and turning wireframes into a polished UI.
- Build flexible, composable components in our design system that allow other engineers to build beautiful, consistent setup wizards.
- Help Product Engineers improve information hierarchy and scannability across the product.
Why Ashby?
- Product at scale: Your work will touch over 100,000 weekly active users, millions of candidates per week, and notable customers like Notion, Linear, Shopify, and Snowflake.
- Foundational commitment: The role has the direct backing of our CEO and Co-Founder Benji and VP of Engineering since day one.
- Complex & powerful UI: Shape a product that feels approachable to first-time users while offering deep customization and automation.
Why You Shouldn’t Apply
- You only want to work on design systems (this is part, but not all of the role).
- You like to do extensive research and user testing before implementation rather than shipping fast to gather feedback.
- You want everything to be perfect before it gets into a user's hands instead of iterating.
- You don’t have excellent taste and execution in visual design.
- You need company-driven process and structure to get projects across the finish line rather than running your own projects.
- You only want to do exciting work (customer issues and investigations are distributed across the team).
Experience Levels
- Junior Design Engineer: No more than 2 years of industry experience as a designer or engineer.
- Design Engineer: 2+ years of continuous experience as an Engineer or Designer with good proficiency in both.
- Staff Design Engineer: Major contributions to a design system, designed and implemented features for hundreds of users, and iterated through feedback.
Engineering Culture
- Minimal Process & Lots of Ownership: Engineers take on problem research, product specs, wireframes, and end-to-end implementation.
- Deliberate Communication: Focus time is held sacred, with engineers in fewer than 2 hours of meetings per week.
- Increase Leverage, Not Team Size: Invest in developer tooling (CI/CD takes ~10m, 15+ deploys a day) and powerful building blocks.
