About the Role

Canonical is seeking an Engineering Director to lead our Business Data unit. You will oversee three engineering teams responsible for internal business systems, data mesh solutions, and system integrations. This role is pivotal in supporting Canonical's global growth by ensuring high-quality engineering standards and operational excellence.

The Business Data Unit

  • Business Systems: Manages NetSuite, Salesforce, and related internal platforms, ensuring compliance and high-quality user experiences.
  • Data Lake: Builds a comprehensive data mesh solution using open-source tools like Trino, Ranger, and Superset.
  • Integrations: Manages Python-based workflows via Temporal and ETL processes using Airbyte to connect internal and external data sources.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor multiple engineering teams, ranging from graduates to seniors.
  • Develop engineering managers and foster a culture of high performance and continuous improvement.
  • Define and implement performance management goals and team health metrics.
  • Oversee product development roadmaps and collaborate with the Commercial Systems leadership team.
  • Drive hiring initiatives to expand the engineering organization.

Requirements

  • Exceptional academic track record (undergraduate degree in a technical subject or equivalent experience).
  • Proven ability to lead large or multiple software engineering teams.
  • Hands-on experience in at least one of the following: CRM/ERP systems, Python, data engineering/governance, or distributed integrations.
  • Strong result-oriented mindset with a track record of exceeding expectations.
  • Professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills.
  • Ability to travel internationally twice a year for company events (up to two weeks per trip).

Nice-to-Have Skills

  • Performance engineering and DevOps/SRE experience.
  • Experience with compliance frameworks.
