
About the Role
Canonical is seeking an Engineering Director to lead the strategy and implementation of next-generation Ubuntu hardware enablement quality. This role is critical to our mission of transforming Linux certification for PC, server, and IoT hardware.
As an Engineering Director, you will be a hands-on leader who remains deeply connected to the code. You will manage managers, drive testing and benchmarking initiatives, and set high standards for quality, performance, and work ethic across the organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Team Leadership: Mentor and grow software engineering teams focused on hardware enablement, QA, and testing.
- Quality Strategy: Lead the OEM QA Engineering team in planning and executing comprehensive quality strategies for Ubuntu Desktop and Core.
- Technical Oversight: Drive automated test capability improvements, oversee test result triage, and contribute to design and code.
- Operational Excellence: Identify and measure indicators of team health, productivity, and performance against benchmark goals.
- Stakeholder Management: Represent the product to partners and customers, specifically working in partnership with leading PC and IoT OEMs.
- Talent Development: Hire staff-level engineers and develop engineering managers while maintaining Canonical’s unique culture.
What We’re Looking For
- Technical Background: Exceptional academic track record and a strong background in Linux-based software engineering, preferably with low-level embedded experience.
- Leadership: Proven experience managing managers and leading teams across multiple time zones.
- Domain Expertise: Understanding of PC, ARM, and RISC-V hardware, as well as the device product lifecycle.
- Communication: Professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills.
- Mindset: Result-oriented, self-motivated, and comfortable with a high degree of accountability.
- Travel: Ability to travel internationally twice a year for company events (up to two weeks per trip).
