Engineering Manager - Data Platform

About the Role

Canonical is building a comprehensive suite of multi-cloud and on-premise data solutions for the enterprise. We are looking for a technical Engineering Manager to lead teams focused on Big Data and MySQL databases. You will help us deliver fault-tolerant, mission-critical distributed systems and build the world’s best data platform.

What You Will Do

• Team Leadership: Hire, coach, mentor, and lead your team by example.
• Technical Contribution: Demonstrate sound engineering skills by directly contributing code when needed.
• Strategy & Execution: Set and manage expectations with engineering teams, senior management, and external stakeholders.
• Culture: Advocate for modern, agile software development practices and foster a collaborative, high-quality engineering culture.
• Operations: Lead a team building scalable data solutions for Kubernetes and cloud machines.
• Collaboration: Act as an active member of the leadership team and collaborate across the organization.
• Travel: Work from home with global travel twice yearly for internal events (1-2 weeks duration).

What We Are Looking For

• Background: Strong software engineering experience, preferably with Python and Golang.
• Domain Expertise: Experience running Big Data or MySQL at scale in production environments.
• Leadership: Proven track record of developing people and building high-quality, open-source software.
• Mindset: An open-minded attitude toward new technologies and a drive to push the boundaries of what is possible.
• Quality Focus: Ability to drive engineering practices centered on performance and quality.

Additional Skills (Bonus)

• Specialist knowledge in Spark, Superset, MySQL, or similar technologies.
• Prior experience working with open-source communities.
