About the Role

Canonical is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead a team focused on optimizing Ubuntu for major public cloud partners, including Amazon, Microsoft, and Google. You will oversee the development, testing, and publication of base Ubuntu images, ensuring high performance and security for millions of users.

As a manager, you will balance technical leadership with people management, fostering a healthy engineering culture while contributing directly to architectural decisions and code reviews.

Key Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership: Build and lead a team of engineers, focusing on coaching, mentoring, and career development.
  • Technical Oversight: Maintain fluency in Python and Golang to lead architectural discussions, perform code reviews, and ensure high-quality engineering practices.
  • Cloud Strategy: Collaborate with external partners to deliver specialized Ubuntu images for modern workloads, including web servers, containers, and GPU-aided AI.
  • Operational Excellence: Build and maintain automated, reliable image delivery and testing pipelines.
  • Stakeholder Management: Represent the team in partner engagements and collaborate with other internal leadership teams.

What We Are Looking For

  • Proven track record of mentoring and developing engineering talent.
  • Strong background in software development with fluency in Python or Golang.
  • Practical experience with at least one major cloud provider (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud).
  • Commitment to agile development methodologies and high-quality software delivery.
  • Bachelor’s or equivalent degree in Computer Science, STEM, or a related field.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
