
About the Role
As the most widely used Linux distribution, Ubuntu underpins the security of the entire internet. The Security Engineering Manager role directly impacts the safety of millions of users worldwide. You will lead a team of security experts dedicated to protecting the open-source ecosystem, addressing emerging threats, and ensuring the integrity of Ubuntu and Canonical products.
What You Will Do
- Team Leadership: Lead and develop a team of engineers, ranging from graduate to senior levels.
- Technical Oversight: Provide guidance on vulnerability remediation and drive new security engineering projects.
- Collaboration: Work with upstream open-source projects on vulnerability lifecycles and coordinate across multiple engineering teams.
- Mentorship: Coach, mentor, and offer career development feedback while identifying team health indicators.
- Process Improvement: Implement disciplined engineering processes and evangelize organizational best practices.
- Stakeholder Management: Represent your team and product to stakeholders, partners, and customers.
What We Are Looking For
- Education: Exceptional academic track record; undergraduate degree in Computer Science/STEM or a compelling alternative path.
- Experience: Solid background in software development, including support and maintenance; experience in an agile environment.
- Technical Skills: Mastery in at least one programming language (Go, Java, C, Python, etc.).
- Security Focus: Knowledgeable and passionate about software and application security.
- Soft Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication in English; ability to build trust and relationships.
- Mindset: Result-oriented with a drive for continual learning and a track record of going above-and-beyond.
- Logistics: Ability to travel twice a year for company events (up to two weeks each).
Optional Skills
- Strong technical understanding of the inner-workings of Linux distributions (ideally Ubuntu or Debian).
