Lead Linux Kernel Engineer - Ubuntu

About the Role

Canonical is seeking an exceptionally talented technology expert to lead the architecture, implementation, and delivery of the Ubuntu Linux kernel. While this is not a formal managerial role, you will provide technical leadership, mentor junior/mid-career engineers, and coordinate with external partners.

Key Responsibilities

• Drive engagements with key Silicon and Cloud partners to provide optimal platform solutions.
• Lead the mitigation of vulnerabilities and drive active hardening of the kernel.
• Architect performance and reliability enhancements for the Ubuntu Linux kernel.
• Streamline packaging and distribution of third-party components.
• Develop scalable delivery methods for Ubuntu Linux that meet strict quality and schedule standards.
• Collaborate with senior technical leadership to maintain Ubuntu's position as a top-tier Linux distribution.

What We Are Looking For

• Experience: Demonstrated technical equivalent of 15+ years of industry experience.
• Technical Skills: Expert understanding of C; proficiency in Python and Bash; deep knowledge of git.
• Kernel Expertise: Demonstrated expertise in *nix-based operating system kernels and distributions.
• Leadership: Strong people skills, initiative, and the ability to drive ideas to completion.
• Soft Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication in English; self-starter capable of thriving in a remote environment.
• Logistics: Ability to travel internationally at least twice a year for company events (up to two weeks per trip).

Nice-to-Have Skills

• Background in RTOS and real-time performance analysis.
• Experience with kernel patching, debugging, device drivers, and BSPs.
• Prior experience with Rust in the context of the Linux kernel.
• Experience with software packaging (Ubuntu/Debian/Snap).
