
About the Role
Canonical is seeking a MAAS Systems Engineer to manage and operate our Toronto-based lab. This role focuses on building tooling to increase data center operational efficiency, supporting Ubuntu server certification for global silicon and server designs. You will work at the intersection of software engineering and hardware operations, ensuring our lab remains a high-performance environment for distributed teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Software Development: Use Python to develop Metal as a Service (MAAS) software for diverse server and network hardware.
- Tooling & Integration: Expand MAAS functionality by creating integrations with testing and scheduling software like Testflinger.
- Lab Operations: Remotely operate a fully automated server lab, ensuring availability for global engineering teams.
- Automation: Improve and extend hardware and network monitoring through automated solutions.
- Collaboration: Work closely with kernel engineers, hardware specialists, and certification teams to solve complex distributed system challenges.
What We Are Looking For
- STEM Bachelor’s degree (Computer Science or Software Engineering preferred).
- Strong Python programming experience.
- Solid Linux administration skills.
- A curious, systematic approach to troubleshooting and performance engineering.
- Excellent communication skills in English.
- Ability to work effectively within a globally distributed team.
- Willingness to travel up to 4 times a year for internal events.
Nice-to-Have Skills
- Experience with both rack and virtual systems.
- Background in data center operations.
- Passion for performance engineering and systematic testing.
