Observability Engineering Manager - Canonical

About the Role

Canonical is seeking an Observability Engineering Manager to lead the development of distributed tracing and service mesh products within our Observability group. You will manage a distributed team, drive technical strategy, and ensure the delivery of high-quality, scalable observability tools for Kubernetes.

Engineering managers at Canonical are hands-on leaders who review code, guide architecture, and foster the professional growth of their team members.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage a distributed team of engineers and oversee the observability portfolio.
• Organize and lead team processes to achieve strategic objectives.
• Conduct regular one-on-one meetings and monitor team health indicators.
• Review code, provide architectural leadership, and facilitate technical delivery.
• Engage with the open-source community and represent Canonical at conferences.
• Collaborate with product managers and architects to define the engineering roadmap.

What We Are Looking For

• Exceptional academic track record (high school and university).
• Proven professional experience in software delivery and open-source development.
• Strong technical background in Linux (Debian/Ubuntu preferred).
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
• Ability to set clear expectations and hold colleagues accountable.
• Willingness to travel up to 4 times a year for internal events.

Nice-to-Have Skills

• Prior experience as an engineering manager building high-performance teams.
• Proficiency in Python and Go.
• Experience with container technologies and observability/monitoring solutions.
• Active contributor to open-source projects.
