Software Architect - Containers / Virtualisation

About the Role

Canonical is seeking an outstanding Software Architect to lead the development of LXD and MicroCloud. You will drive the architecture, design, and evolution of our container and virtual machine orchestration technologies, ensuring they are secure, performant, and easy to use.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the architecture for LXD and MicroCloud.
  • Develop high-quality code in Golang and C.
  • Mentor and advise colleagues to support their career progression.
  • Conduct code reviews and ensure product performance and security.
  • Provide technical leadership within Canonical and the broader open-source community.
  • Participate in global team sprints twice annually.

What We Are Looking For

  • Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM.
  • Exceptional academic track record.
  • Proven experience with Go and C.
  • Deep knowledge of storage, networking, and virtualization.
  • Experience with container technologies and concurrent, distributed systems.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate teams and drive direction.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a self-starting, detail-oriented mindset.
  • Professional proficiency in English.
  • Experience with Linux (Debian or Ubuntu preferred).
