Software Engineer, Sustaining Engineering - Canonical

About the Role

Canonical is seeking a Software Engineer for our Sustaining Engineering team. This is a fast-paced, critical role focused on Linux-based software-defined infrastructure and applications. You will work across the entire stack, including bare metal, virtualization (KVM), containerization (Docker/LXC/LXD), storage (Ceph), networking (OVS/OVN), and orchestration layers like OpenStack and Kubernetes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Resolve complex customer issues related to Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, and Kubernetes.
  • Develop bug fixes, backport patches, and collaborate with upstream open-source communities.
  • Maintain close relationships with Field, Support, and product engineering teams.
  • Review code produced by other engineers and contribute to technical documentation.
  • Participate in team discussions to improve processes and tools.
  • Work from home with international travel up to 10% of the time for team meetings and events.

Requirements

  • Professional experience as a software engineer.
  • Strong background in Computer Science, STEM, or a related field.
  • Strong experience with Linux and at least one of the following: Ceph, OpenStack, or Kubernetes.
  • Development-level experience with at least one of: Python, Go, C, or C++.
  • Proficiency in troubleshooting with debugging tools like gdb.
  • Familiarity with git source code repositories and branching strategies.
  • Exceptional academic track record.
  • Willingness to travel internationally up to 4 times per year.

Nice-to-Have Skills

  • Experience with QEMU/KVM, LXC/LXD, Postgresql, Mongo, or Debian packaging.
  • Passion for open-source development and distributed systems.
