Software Engineering Manager - Sustaining Engineering

About the Role

Canonical is seeking an Engineering Manager for our Sustaining Engineering team. This business-critical team continuously improves open-source software by resolving defects reported by customers, covering the stack from the kernel to user-space applications and IaaS platforms.

As a manager, your primary responsibility is to your people: ensuring they grow as engineers, make valuable contributions, and have a great experience. You will lead a regional team, reporting directly to the global Director of Sustaining Engineering.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and lead a distributed team of engineers.
  • Hire, coach, mentor, and provide career development guidance.
  • Manage and measure key performance indicators (KPIs) and training.
  • Support the timely delivery of bug fixes, patches, and technical solutions for Ubuntu, OpenStack, Ceph, Kubernetes, Juju, and MAAS.
  • Advocate for modern software development practices and maintainable code quality.
  • Foster a healthy, collaborative engineering culture.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
  • Travel globally up to 10% for internal and external events.

What We Are Looking For

  • Professional software delivery experience using C, C++, Go, or Python.
  • Strong technical leadership experience in complex problem resolution.
  • Proficiency with version control (git) and debugging tools (gdb, crash).
  • Demonstrated commitment to testing methodologies.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Deep experience with Linux (Ubuntu preferred).
  • Understanding of Open Source business models.
  • People management experience in a support organization is a strong plus.
