About the Role

Canonical is hiring a Ubuntu Core Software Engineer to redefine the Linux experience in embedded environments. You will work on the smallest, most secure, and updatable operating system in the IoT market, focusing on low-level OS components, kernel, and device firmware.

Key Responsibilities

  • Write high-quality, unit-tested code for new features.
  • Debug and resolve complex Linux system-level issues.
  • Collaborate proactively within a distributed, global team.
  • Review code and contribute to architectural solutions.
  • Integrate diverse bootloaders and maintain gadget snaps.
  • Design software for ARM, RISC-V, and X86 architectures, including boot mechanisms, storage layouts, and device trees.

What We Are Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, STEM, or equivalent.
  • Proficiency in C, Golang, and Shell scripting.
  • Solid understanding of Linux and modern distributions (Debian/Ubuntu preferred).
  • Experience with Linux-capable devices (e.g., Raspberry Pi).
  • Curiosity and a passion for low-level systems and security.
  • Interest or experience in:
    • Bootloaders (piboot, uboot, grub-uefi)
    • Systemd, udev, initrd, and graphics stacks
    • OS-level firmware daemons and CLI applications
    • Linux security (TPM, FDE, LUKS, HSM)
  • Knowledge of Yocto is a plus.
