About the Role

Canonical is seeking a Linux Kernel Engineer to join our globally distributed team. You will take ownership of aspects pertaining to the boot process, BIOS, UEFI, ACPI, and other platform firmware components within the Ubuntu Linux kernel. This role is critical to maintaining the stability, reliability, and performance of Ubuntu across x86/amd64 environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate proactively with a globally distributed team.
  • Work with PC platform enablement teams and vendors to resolve issues involving BIOS, UEFI, ACPI, and kernel boot configuration.
  • Serve as a primary contributor and maintainer for the Firmware Test Suite (FWTS).
  • Develop tooling and automation to verify Ubuntu Linux on x86 platforms.
  • Submit, review, and apply kernel patches in collaboration with upstream maintainers.

Requirements

  • Significant programming ability in C.
  • Demonstrated software development experience with UEFI and/or ACPI, including in-depth understanding of AML.
  • Solid background with git.
  • Familiarity with the x86 bootstrap process.
  • Strong understanding of OS kernel fundamentals, specifically ACPI and UEFI interaction.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Ability to travel internationally twice a year for company events (up to two weeks per trip).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Python and Bash scripting proficiency.
  • Prior experience with the coreboot project.
  • Experience with Ubuntu/Debian/Snap packaging.
  • Experience with Linux kernel patching and debugging.
  • Familiarity with Devicetree, SystemReady, u-boot, or non-x86 bootstrap mechanisms.
