Engineering Manager - Workers Runtime, Edge Team

About the Role

Cloudflare’s Emerging Technologies & Incubation (ETI) team is looking for an Engineering Manager to lead the Workers Runtime team. You will own the runtime service in production across our global fleet, driving the architectural evolution of a platform that executes customer code at the edge.

Our work is deeply systems-oriented. We build and maintain the C++ and Rust codebase that embeds the JavaScript engine, manages isolate lifecycles, enforces resource limits, and orchestrates how customer scripts are loaded, cached, and executed in a hostile multi-tenant environment.

Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership: Lead a team of senior systems engineers; hire, mentor, and develop talent while setting clear expectations.
  • Architectural Strategy: Drive major infrastructure initiatives, including migrating legacy systems and redesigning core abstractions.
  • Production Ownership: Own reliability and release safety for a service handling tens of millions of requests per second.
  • Operational Excellence: Improve release processes, health monitoring, and automated rollback mechanisms.
  • Prioritization: Balance customer-facing feature work with foundational investments in security, reliability, and developer velocity.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Partner with Developer Platform teams to align the runtime with broader product roadmaps (compute, storage, networking, observability).

Desirable Skills & Experience

  • Experience leading and hiring teams that build low-level distributed systems.
  • Strong planning skills with a track record of predictable execution.
  • At least 4 years of recent professional experience with C++ or Rust.
  • Deep understanding of Linux systems programming, process models, and networking.
  • Solid grasp of computer science fundamentals (data structures, algorithms, design patterns).
  • Familiarity with web technologies (HTTP, JavaScript, WebAssembly).
  • Ability to explain both the “why” and the “how” of technical decisions.

Bonus Points

  • Experience with high-performance distributed systems or serverless platforms.
  • Internals knowledge of JS engines (V8, SpiderMonkey, JavaScriptCore) or Wasm runtimes (Wasmtime, Wasmer).
  • Contributions to large open-source projects.
  • Experience in low-latency environments (game streaming, HFT, payment systems).

Benefits

Cloudflare offers a comprehensive benefits package, including:

  • Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance.
  • 401(k) retirement savings plan and Employee Stock Participation Plan.
  • Flexible paid time off and parental/medical leave programs.
  • Mental health support and Employee Assistance Program.
  • Fertility and family-forming benefits.
