About the Role

The Emerging Technologies & Incubation (ETI) Storage Infrastructure team is responsible for the core storage layer underpinning stateful services like R2, Durable Objects, and Workers KV. We manage everything from physical hardware to distributed databases, ensuring reliability, performance, and scalability across our global edge network.

Responsibilities

• Develop features and extensions for distributed databases powering R2, Durable Objects, and Workers KV.
• Maintain high standards for correctness through rigorous code reviews, testing, and staged rollouts.
• Tune performance and resource utilization in production environments.
• Optimize data placement, replication, and schema design for our edge topology.
• Build observability and tooling to support database operations.
• Work with a tech stack including Go, Rust, Saltstack, and Terraform.

Desirable Skills & Experience

• Experience contributing to distributed databases or storage systems (e.g., CockroachDB, FoundationDB, Cassandra, MongoDB).
• Strong programming skills in Go, Rust, or C++.
• Deep understanding of distributed systems concepts: consensus protocols (Raft/Paxos), MVCC, transaction isolation, and fault tolerance.
• Experience debugging complex codebases under strict concurrency and durability constraints.
• Familiarity with LSM-tree storage engines (RocksDB, Pebble) and storage fundamentals (block devices, filesystems).
• Experience with infrastructure-as-code and monitoring tools like Prometheus and Grafana.
