Senior Software Engineer, R2 Metadata - Cloudflare

About the Role

Cloudflare’s Emerging Technologies & Incubation (ETI) team is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join the R2 Metadata team. R2 is Cloudflare's object storage platform, and the metadata layer is the critical backbone that handles every object operation—put, get, list, and delete—at global scale.

You will work at the intersection of distributed databases, large-scale storage infrastructure, and edge computing, ensuring our systems remain correct, fast, and reliable as R2 continues to grow.

Responsibilities

• System Design: Design and implement features for a metadata system backed by a distributed SQL database, ensuring high performance and S3 API compatibility.
• Production Operations: Build and operate services on Cloudflare Workers and Kubernetes, maintaining strong consistency and durability guarantees.
• Data Modeling: Own the schema, data model, and query patterns for a metadata layer managing billions of objects across distributed clusters.
• Project Ownership: Manage projects end-to-end, from design documentation and schema changes to implementation, testing, deployment, and monitoring.
• Reliability: Participate in on-call rotations, drive incident resolution, and author post-mortems to improve system resilience.
• AI Integration: Leverage AI tools extensively to accelerate development, debugging, and operational workflows.
• Collaboration: Coordinate with storage infrastructure, networking, and platform teams on capacity planning and API contracts.

Desirable Skills & Experience

• Programming: Strong proficiency in TypeScript, Go, or similar languages.
• Distributed Systems: Experience with distributed databases, including schema design, query optimization, indexing, and consistency/performance tradeoffs.
• Infrastructure: Familiarity with object storage, edge computing, or service-oriented architectures.
• Observability: Strong understanding of monitoring, alerting, performance tuning, and incident response.
• Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills for cross-team coordination.
• AI Proficiency: Comfortable integrating AI coding tools into daily development.
• Bonus: Experience with Cloudflare Workers or Durable Objects is a strong plus.
