Senior Systems Engineer, Cloudflare Tunnel - Cloudflare

About the Role

As a Senior Systems Engineer on the Cloudflare Tunnel team, you will drive the technical vision and architecture for future scale, ensuring our product securely connects any machine to the Cloudflare network. You will be responsible for the strategic design of systems across our high-performance global edge network and microservice clusters.

Responsibilities

• Lead the architecture and implementation of complex software systems for Cloudflare Tunnel, including the cross-platform, open-source client and high-performance edge services.
• Manage the full software development lifecycle, from design and documentation to coding, automated testing, and production monitoring.
• Influence and collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders (Security, Network Engineering, SRE, Product) to scale technical solutions.
• Foster technical excellence through mentorship, proactive code reviews, and establishing engineering standards.
• Debug complex distributed systems and contribute to long-term operational health.
• Work with a diverse tech stack including Go, Rust, TypeScript, SQL/No-SQL databases, Docker, and Kubernetes.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience in backend software development building secure, highly available distributed systems.
• Strong programming proficiency in Go, Rust, C++, or similar systems-level languages.
• Solid understanding of modern Unix/Linux development and runtime environments.
• Deep knowledge of networking protocols (Layers 3-7) and network programming.
• Familiarity with microservices, RESTful API design, and software security/encryption principles.
• Experience with monitoring tools (Prometheus, Grafana) and container orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes).
• Strong interpersonal skills with a focus on empathy, teamwork, and ownership.
