Member of Technical Staff (Production Services) - Cockroach Labs

The Role

Production Services owns the customer-facing capabilities of CockroachDB Cloud. The team manages and builds platform features such as AI-driven tools, backup and restore, disaster recovery, and private connectivity. Unlike internal tooling teams, the features you ship go directly to customers, providing a tight feedback loop and deep distributed systems challenges.

We are looking for a Software Engineer based in Toronto to join our Production Engineering organization. You will work directly on systems that protect customer data and power the operational platform of CockroachDB Cloud.

You Will

• Build and maintain managed backup and restore systems with a focus on reliability, observability, and SLA compliance.
• Develop customer-facing platform capabilities that shape the CockroachDB Cloud experience.
• Instrument systems with metrics and alerts to reduce mean time to resolution.
• Reduce operational toil through automation and tooling.
• Identify opportunities to apply AI to operational workflows, including alert triage and automated diagnostics.
• Participate in on-call rotations for production systems.
• Partner with Production Infrastructure and Orchestration teams on cross-cutting reliability initiatives.

You Have

• 5+ years of experience and a CS degree or equivalent background.
• Strong understanding of reliability principles, SLOs/SLAs, and error budgets.
• Experience building and running production-grade systems (data pipelines, backup/restore, or infrastructure).
• Proficiency in Go or Python (willingness to learn Go is required).
• Strong observability instincts and experience instrumenting systems.
• Experience running Kubernetes in production.
• Familiarity with major cloud provider APIs (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
• Working knowledge of networking fundamentals (HTTP, TLS, DNS).
• Previous on-call experience and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
• A collaborative mindset with experience in code reviews and pair programming.
