Director, Product Marketing - Code for America

Code for America believes government can work for the people, by the people, in the new digital age, and that government at all levels can and should work well for all people. For more than a decade, we’ve worked to show that with the mindful use of technology, we can break down barriers, meet community needs, and find real solutions.

Code for America is looking for a talented Director, Product Marketing who will drive product marketing work across our full portfolio — from early-stage tools still being validated to more mature products — and across both the institutions we partner with and the people those products ultimately serve. In this role, you will lead the go-to-market strategy and bring it to life, working closely with Product, Outreach, Program, and Marketing & Communications.

This role reports to the Sr. Director of Product Management and is expected to travel no more than 10% of the time.

Responsibilities

Set Go-to-Market Strategy and Positioning

  • Define positioning and messaging for our products, developing distinct approaches for government and institutional partners, as well as clients Code for America directly serves.
  • Write and guide the development of plain, accessible messaging for people navigating complex systems, often with limited time, trust, or prior exposure to these services.
  • Prioritize target audiences and shape strategy to address the barriers keeping them from adopting our products.
  • Build and own the go-to-market plan for each product — audience, channels, messaging, sequencing — adapting it to the product's stage, from early validation to scaled growth.
  • Coordinate product launches so product readiness, messaging, and distribution activity are aligned and on schedule.
  • Build proof points, such as case studies, usage data, and client/partner stories that support broader storytelling and visibility into our reach and impact.

Enable Partners and Channels

  • Build toolkits, templates, and core messaging that Outreach and other frontline teams can adapt across channels and partner types.
  • Prioritize enablement investment toward the partners and channels with the greatest reach and impact.

Measurement and Learning

  • Define what success looks like for each go-to-market effort and what we most need to learn at each stage.
  • Design and run experiments on messaging, channel, and segmentation, and turn adoption, engagement, and conversion data into changes in strategy.
  • Bring enough fluency in paid, search, and SEO channels to brief, direct, and evaluate specialist or contractor execution where those channels are part of the mix.

Cross-Functional Partnership

  • Partner closely with Product, Outreach, Program, Marketing & Communications, Philanthropy, Client Success, and Data Science to turn strategy into results across the portfolio.
  • Build trust and shared context with teams and stakeholders across a still-maturing function.
  • Bring a product marketing perspective into discussions big and small, from early product strategy through execution.

Managing Contractors and Agency Partners

  • Manage contractors or agencies supporting demand generation and other specialized execution.
  • Set clear expectations and review quality to ensure external work stays aligned with go-to-market strategy.
  • Engage in ad hoc projects and initiatives as required by organizational need.

Requirements

  • 8+ years in product marketing or a closely related function, including senior-level experience operating with significant autonomy.
  • Experience managing direct reports and/or directly leading contractor or agency teams, with readiness to build and manage a team as needs evolve.
  • Demonstrated experience developing positioning, messaging, and go-to-market strategy across a product’s lifecycle, from early validation through scaled growth.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate strategy into shipped, measurable results.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and grow a go-to-market function, sequencing investments deliberately.
  • Experience writing or guiding plain-language, accessible messaging for people navigating complex systems or under-resourced communities.
  • Working fluency in acquisition and demand-generation channels (paid, search, SEO) sufficient to direct and evaluate specialist execution.
  • Experience defining success metrics, designing experiments, and translating data into strategic recommendations.
  • Proven judgment operating in ambiguous, matrixed organizations, including building credibility and influence with senior stakeholders.
  • Excellent writing skills, including the ability to adapt the same message for clients and for government or institutional partners.
  • Curiosity about emerging AI tools and a commitment to using them responsibly and effectively.
  • A deep commitment to Code for America's mission of making government services work well for the people who need them most.

Bonus Qualifications

  • Experience in nonprofit, government, or another sensitive, highly regulated consumer category (healthcare, financial services, benefits), particularly where privacy and consent constraints limit standard marketing playbooks.
  • Familiarity with CRM and partner-tracking tooling (e.g., HubSpot, Airtable) and interest in improving how it's used.
  • Spanish-language fluency or experience overseeing multilingual campaign materials.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Base Salary: $143,884.00 - $176,138.00 annually (targeted at the midpoint of the 2nd quartile based on location).
  • Remote Enablement: Laptop provided, a one-time $700 remote setup support ($200 stipend in first paycheck + up to $500 reimbursement), and $50/month cell phone/internet reimbursement.
  • Professional Growth: $500 annual professional development stipend (up to $500 rollover up to $1,000 max) plus AI training opportunities.
  • Retirement: 401(k) with 100% match on the first 3%, increasing to a maximum 5% match after 3 years of service.
  • Health Care: At least one no-cost health insurance option for employee-only coverage, and minimum 80% coverage for dependents.
  • Time Off: Open personal time off, 14 paid holidays, year-end closure from Christmas Day through New Year's Day, up to 96 hours paid sick time, 17 weeks paid parental/family leave, and a 3-week sabbatical after 5 years.
  • Schedule: Full-time (40 hours/week, Monday-Friday) with core collaborative meeting hours between 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM PT.
