Senior Complex Claims Adjuster - Kin

Quick Summary

Take ownership of complex, high-exposure property claims from first notice of loss through resolution — investigating, negotiating, and settling represented and large-loss files while guiding policyholders through critical moments.

Who We Are

Kin makes life simpler, more affordable, and better for homeowners — especially in the places where climate risks, rising costs, and outdated systems make it harder. We start with smarter homeowners insurance and expand to everything homeowners need to thrive.

Founded in 2016, Kin is a remote-first employer with team members across more than 35 states. We serve customers in 14 states (and counting). Our disciplined growth, strong customer satisfaction, and focus on long-term sustainability fosters outstanding growth, attracts marquee investors, and earns recognition including Built In Chicago's Best Places to Work, Forbes' America's Best Startup Employers, Inc. 5000, and Forbes' Fintech 50.

The Opportunity

Kin is seeking a Senior Complex Claims Adjuster with first-party property claims experience to join our growing team. As a Senior Complex Claims Adjuster, you can expect to handle structure, dwelling, and contents claims. You will draw on your expertise in property claims while helping us innovate on behalf of Kin’s customers and stakeholders.

It is pivotal that you exhibit strong negotiation tactics in addition to analytical, organizational, and investigative skills as you will be working with larger losses and represented claims. Building rapport and keeping in close contact with policyholders is vital to success in this role.

Your Responsibilities

  • Examine and appropriately interpret policy terms, forms in force, and records to determine coverage and liability.
  • Draft, approve, and adjust estimates of damage and loss amounts utilizing Xactimate and Xactanalysis.
  • Conduct investigations using recorded statements, property inspections, consultations with police and fire departments, and document reviews.
  • Maintain clear, concise diary notes, collaborate with field vendors, set and save contacts, and issue payments.
  • Apply multi-state statutes, insurance code of ethics, regulations, and guidelines accurately.
  • Negotiate effectively with attorneys and public adjusters to achieve fair and equitable claim settlements.
  • Serve as a resource and mentor to less experienced claims team members.

Success in This Role

  • caseload Management: Independently handle a full caseload of complex, high-exposure property claims from initial notice through resolution while meeting quality and timeliness benchmarks.
  • Regulatory Command: Demonstrate thorough knowledge of multi-state requirements, policy interpretation, clear coverage denial/reservation of rights letters, and attorney negotiations.

What You’ll Bring

  • 3+ years of first-party property claims adjusting experience directly with a carrier, handling files with exposure up to $100,000.
  • Hands-on experience managing attorney- and public adjuster-represented claims.
  • Experience drafting complex reservation of rights letters, coverage denial letters, and release letters.
  • Proficiency conducting thorough recorded statements, identifying subrogation opportunities, and recognizing fraud indicators.
  • Technical proficiency in Xactimate/Xactanalysis alongside general tools like Excel, Snapsheet, Slack, and CRM systems.
  • Working knowledge of insurance laws, good-faith practices, timelines, and regulatory requirements across multiple states.
  • Familiarity with the litigation process, including deposition or mediation experience (preferred).
  • Catastrophe Requirement: Availability for required overtime and weekend shifts in the event of catastrophic events.

How We Support You

  • Core Benefits: Competitive base salary, RSUs (equity), 401(k) with company match up to 4%, multiple medical, dental, and vision options, company-funded HSA contributions, paid life insurance, and short-term disability.
  • Health & Wellbeing: Flexible PTO (15–20 days typical) plus 8 paid holidays, paid parental leave (up to 14 weeks for birthing parents / 8 weeks for non-birthing parents), mental health resources, and supplemental insurance options.
  • Growth & Development: Career mobility and dedicated professional development budgets for approved certifications and learning opportunities.
