Senior Software Engineer, Search & AI - Muck Rack

About the Role

Muck Rack is looking for a collaborative, self-motivated Senior Software Engineer, Search & AI to join our growing team. You will help build and evolve customer-facing search experiences and the backend systems that power them. You will work across the stack, with a slight emphasis on frontend development, collaborating closely with Product and Design to deliver intuitive, scalable search solutions.

What You'll Do

• Own and deliver customer-facing search features and workflows from technical planning through production.
• Build AI-powered product experiences end-to-end, including services and user interfaces.
• Develop intuitive, responsive user experiences using Vue.js while contributing to Python/Django backend services.
• Design and improve search, indexing, and retrieval systems (Elasticsearch) for large-scale data.
• Maintain data workflows using Kafka, Celery, and MySQL.
• Make technical trade-offs balancing performance, reliability, and maintainability.
• Participate in on-call and incident response rotations.

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Strong full-stack experience independently delivering features.
• Proficiency in Python/Django and modern JavaScript frameworks (Vue.js).
• Experience with Elasticsearch or similar data-intensive search technologies.
• Experience with TypeScript in large codebases.
• Familiarity with design systems or shared component libraries.
• Ability to adjust working hours for overlap with US time zones.

Bonus Points

• Experience with Kafka, Celery, or asynchronous task processing.
• Experience with LLMs, AI model evaluation, or search/discovery indexing.
• Background in high-traffic SaaS or media/journalism tech.

Travel & Engagement

This role requires up to 10% travel for team collaboration and customer engagements, including attendance at our annual company offsite.
