
At Rula, exceptional patient outcomes are powered by world-class engineering. As a Senior Software Engineer on our Patient Services team, you won’t just maintain existing systems—you will architect the high-throughput, distributed platform that serves as the single source of truth for all patient data across Rula. We are currently undergoing a period of hyper-scale, and you will lead the technical strategy for one of our highest-impact initiatives: re-engineering our core backend data systems to be massively scalable, resilient, and fault-tolerant.
In this critical role, you will tackle complex distributed systems challenges where system performance, uptime, and data integrity directly impact real human lives seeking mental healthcare. You will drive zero-to-one architectural decisions during a pivotal growth phase while acting as both a technical leader and a force multiplier for the team.
About the Role
- Architect high-throughput, distributed platforms serving as the single source of truth for patient data.
- Lead technical strategy for re-engineering core backend data systems to be massively scalable and fault-tolerant.
- Drive zero-to-one architectural decisions during hyper-scale growth.
- Act as a technical leader and mentor high-performing engineers.
- Partner directly with product managers and cross-functional teams to shape the engineering roadmap and product vision.
Required Qualifications
- 4+ years of related professional experience
- Experience building distributed and event-driven systems
- Experience with microservice development
- Experience working on cross-functional teams to bridge the gap between technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Fluency in AI-assisted development tools and frameworks, capable of setting and maintaining proper quality guardrails
- Experience mentoring others, reviewing architectures, and establishing design patterns
Preferred Qualifications
- Degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience
- Experience being on-call and driving sustainable operational improvements in a customer-facing product
- Prior experience in early-stage and/or high-growth startup environments
- Previous experience in products with high reliability/accuracy requirements (finance, healthcare, mission-critical systems, etc.)
- Experience with Node.js and Kafka
