Manager of the Technical Staff - Next.js

About Vercel

Vercel is the agentic infrastructure company. We create products like Next.js, v0, and the AI SDK that help builders move from idea to production with speed, security, and exceptional developer experience. We are building the platform for the future of software, where products are built, extended, and operated by agents.

About the Role

The Next.js team builds the open-source framework that powers millions of applications. We are looking for an Engineering Team Lead to act as a hands-on player/coach. You will be an engineer first and a manager second, spending the majority of your time on technical leadership, code contribution, and architectural decision-making while supporting your team's growth.

What You Will Do

  • Build and ship Next.js: Write production code, review pull requests, and debug complex issues.
  • Lead technical initiatives: Own projects from exploration through architecture, implementation, and rollout.
  • Set technical direction: Make architectural decisions across rendering, caching, routing, build systems, and runtime behavior.
  • Raise the engineering bar: Establish patterns for code quality, performance, reliability, and observability.
  • Coach and lead: Provide clear direction, thoughtful feedback, and practical coaching to help engineers grow.
  • Improve execution: Create lightweight planning and decision-making practices to help the team ship consistently.
  • Partner across Vercel: Collaborate with Product, Design, and Infrastructure teams to ensure seamless integration.
  • Champion open source: Engage with the community and balance public contributions with product priorities.

About You

  • 8+ years of software engineering experience with a track record of hands-on execution.
  • Proven experience leading engineers or small technical teams.
  • Strong technical judgment in React, framework architecture, or large-scale open-source systems.
  • Ability to solve complex problems from first principles and guide teams toward clean abstractions.
  • Experience building developer-facing products with high standards for performance and usability.
  • Excellent written communication skills and ability to facilitate technical debate.
  • Familiarity with AI tools and informed opinions on agentic product development.
