As a Software Engineer, you will:

• Develop and maintain tools to help communities identify, mitigate, and prevent abuse on Wikimedia projects.
• Design privacy-conscious systems for abuse detection that respect user anonymity.
• Adapt abuse detection strategies to evolving privacy standards and platform architecture.
• Collaborate with product managers, designers, and researchers on human-centered safety solutions.
• Write resilient, maintainable code with a focus on long-term sustainability.
• Implement observability for system quality and stability.
• Measure the impact of anti-abuse initiatives.

Skills and Experience:

• 1+ years of related professional experience.
• Experience building and maintaining large-scale applications.
• Proficiency in PHP, Javascript, or similar languages.
• Proficiency in relational databases.
• Strong foundation in security principles.
• Experience driving cross-team objectives.
• Experience driving user and product impact.

Qualities:

• Collaboration, humility, and a shared commitment to Wikimedia’s vision.
• Clear and empathetic communication in synchronous and asynchronous settings.

Additionally, we'd love to see:

• Familiarity with abuse fighting or security concerns.
• A history of open-source contributions.

Salaries are competitive, equitable, and consistent with our values. The anticipated annual pay range for this position within the United States is US$92,267 to US$144,201. Pay will be adjusted for applicants located outside the US based on the country of hire. Salary history is not considered.
