
About the Role
Canonical is seeking an exceptional Staff Design Engineer to shape the future of cloud networking user experience. You will define the UX vision for our cloud portfolio, including MAAS, MicroCloud, and Ubuntu Server networking, making complex infrastructure intuitive and manageable at scale.
Key Responsibilities
- UX Strategy: Define and drive the UX strategy for cloud networking products across the Canonical portfolio.
- Interface Design: Design intuitive interfaces for complex concepts like VPCs, subnets, routing tables, security groups, load balancers, and network observability.
- Design Systems: Create and evolve design systems and patterns that scale across multiple products.
- User Research: Conduct research with DevOps engineers, SREs, and network architects to understand workflows and mental models.
- Prototyping: Build prototypes and high-fidelity designs using Figma or similar tools.
- Cross-Platform UX: Design experiences for both GUI and terminal-based (CLI) environments.
- Leadership: Mentor designers, contribute to design culture, and own horizontal working groups.
What We Are Looking For
- 8+ years of experience in product, UX, or interaction design with a strong B2B/enterprise portfolio.
- Solid understanding of cloud computing and networking fundamentals.
- Strong information architecture skills with the ability to organize complex systems.
- Proven experience in user research methodologies.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to articulate design rationale to technical audiences.
- Self-motivated, organized, and comfortable in a distributed, remote-first environment.
- Bachelor’s degree in UX, Design, STEM, or equivalent experience.
- Ability to travel internationally twice a year for company events.
