
About the Role
Canonical is seeking a Usability Engineer to join our Design Team. As part of our newly formed User Science team, you will help expand beyond traditional UX research by integrating user needs end-to-end into development processes and quality standards across the company.
Key Responsibilities
- Data Synthesis: Collect and analyze user data from A/B tests, usability studies, and other methodologies to generate actionable insights.
- Prototyping: Build lightweight prototypes, data visualization dashboards, or automation scripts to enhance research consumption.
- Stakeholder Communication: Calibrate research presentations for a highly technical audience, ensuring the right level of depth for each stakeholder.
- Culture Building: Promote a data-informed culture by working closely with product and engineering teams to integrate research into decision-making.
- Research Ops: Strengthen infrastructure to make methodologies more accessible, scalable, and repeatable.
- Learning & Development: Contribute to the definition of User Science through training, resource development, and outreach.
What We Are Looking For
- Exceptional academic track record (Bachelor’s or Master’s in Design, Engineering, Data Science, or equivalent experience).
- Proficiency in both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies (interviews, usability testing, A/B testing, surveys).
- A "tinkerer" mindset with a passion for hacking, scripting, and building creative research solutions.
- Technical fluency to engage deeply with engineering teams and process optimization.
- Strong organizational skills for building research frameworks and best practices.
- Impeccable verbal and written communication skills.
- A robust portfolio showcasing research, design, or engineering projects.
Nice to Have
- Experience with Linux and container technologies (LXD, Docker, Kubernetes).
- Knowledge of data analysis frameworks (Python/pandas, R, MATLAB).
- Experience contributing to Open Source projects.
- A passion for aesthetics and data visualization.
