The Opportunity

The Engineering Manager is a hands-on, player-coach leadership role. You are embedded with your team — daily standup, code review, architectural calls, delivery planning, and performance management — and you own both the team's output and the team's growth.

This is a genuinely technical & leadership role. You are expected to write and review code, be a credible voice in architectural decisions, and stay current in your team's stack. You lead by demonstrating you can do the work at the highest level, not by title alone. The balance between hands-on contribution and leadership depends on the team's context, but your overarching mandate is the same: run the team, execute and deliver, and grow its impact.

Build the bench, raise the standard, and keep the operating cadence sharp as the work and the organization evolve. You work AI-augmented yourself, expect the same from your team, and push the team's craft forward with every new capability that lands.

Responsibilities

Team Leadership & Growth

  • Lead a team of engineers, owning both its delivery and its development.
  • Lead a mindset and process of continuous improvement within the team and meaningfully impact the team’s success over time through small, compounding improvements delivered via fast iterations.
  • Responsible for the professional well-being and career development of team members. Develop engineers through regular 1:1s, growth plans, performance reviews, and direct, candid feedback.
  • Develop the next layer of leadership — tech leads, senior engineers ready to manage, and ICs ready to step into staff roles.

Technical Leadership

  • Write code and review code. Be a credible voice in technical decisions because you have hands in the work.
  • Drive the team's architectural and technical design decisions in partnership with senior ICs, ensuring alignment on approach and implementation.
  • Uphold engineering standards through thorough, constructive pull-request reviews and a healthy release process, keeping the team's components scalable and in a healthy state.
  • Work AI-augmented and lead an AI-augmented team, applying sharp judgment about where AI helps and holding a high quality bar for what ships.

Roadmap & Delivery

  • Own the team's commitments — what was promised, when it was promised, and the quality bar held.
  • Run a disciplined cadence of planning, prioritization, and delivery without becoming a process bureaucrat.
  • Partner closely with the Technical Product Owner and Product team on scope, sequencing, and tradeoffs, maintaining a roadmap that reflects both near-term priorities and longer-term direction.
  • Understand the broader business objectives behind the work, translate context for the team, and ensure engineering effort aligns with business objectives.
  • React decisively to change — re-planning, re-prioritizing, and re-staffing as the business moves — while keeping the team engaged and steady.

Hiring & Collaboration

  • Own hiring for your team. Interview thoughtfully, decide quickly, and refuse to lower the bar to fill seats.
  • Recruit, coach, and make hard calls toward the standard the team is held to.
  • Operate as a role model for other engineering managers across the organization: share your operating model, mentor peers, and raise the management bench.
  • Communication:
    • Upwards: Communicate clearly and succinctly, giving leadership the right context and prioritizing escalations.
    • Downwards: Empower senior engineers to own key product areas, coaching team members to stay focused and aware of impact.
    • Sideways: Partner effectively with Product, Design, GTM, Customer Success, and other teams to support cross-team alignment.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of engineering experience, including 4+ years in engineering management roles where you actively coded as part of your responsibilities.
  • Hands-on, real-life experience building cloud-based SaaS products — running services in production for Azure (and ideally additionally on AWS/GCP), and owning availability, cost, and customer-facing surface.
  • Strong background in understanding and leading teams in the FinOps space.
  • API-first mindset: products are built not just for UI end-user experience, but fully functional and available through APIs for both humans and agents.
  • Strong background in engineering management of multi-disciplinary teams, including full-stack engineers and data engineers.
  • A track record of visibly transforming an engineering team — measurable improvements in velocity, quality, or team caliber.
  • Deep technical fluency in your team's primary stack with senior-level code reading, writing, and review capabilities.
  • Strong opinions on high-performing engineering operations, hiring, coaching, performance management, and technical decision-making.
  • Excellent judgment under pressure, making quick calls with imperfect information and taking responsibility for outcomes.
  • Direct, candid communication skills for giving and receiving feedback.

Bonus Points

  • Strong Golang knowledge or experience.
  • An established AI-augmented workflow, with opinions on applying AI tools and agentic workflows to increase velocity and quality.
  • Hands-on experience with multiple cloud providers.
  • Background scaling teams, processes, or technical systems during organizational growth.
