The Opportunity
The Engineering Manager is a hands-on, player-coach leadership role. You are embedded with your team — daily standup, code review, architectural calls, delivery planning, and performance management — and you own both the team's output and the team's growth.
This is a genuinely technical and leadership role. You are expected to write and review code, be a credible voice in architectural decisions, and stay current in your team's stack. You lead by demonstrating you can do the work at the highest level, not by title alone. You work AI-augmented yourself, expect the same from your team, and push the team's craft forward with every new capability that lands.
Responsibilities
Team Leadership & Growth
- Lead a team of engineers, owning both delivery and development.
- Foster a mindset and process of continuous improvement within the team, aiming for small, compounding improvements via fast iterations.
- Take responsibility for the professional well-being and career development of team members through regular 1:1s, growth plans, performance reviews, and direct feedback.
- Develop the next layer of leadership — tech leads, senior engineers ready to manage, and ICs ready for staff roles.
Technical Leadership
- Write and review code. Maintain a credible voice in technical decisions by keeping hands-on and current.
- Drive architectural and technical design decisions in partnership with senior ICs, ensuring alignment on approach and implementation.
- Uphold engineering standards through thorough, constructive pull-request reviews and a healthy release process.
- Work AI-augmented and lead an AI-augmented team, holding a high quality bar for what ships.
Roadmap & Delivery
- Own team commitments across scope, timeline, and quality.
- Maintain a disciplined cadence of planning, prioritization, and delivery.
- Partner closely with the Technical Product Owner and Product team to balance near-term priorities with long-term direction.
- Translate broader business objectives for the team to ensure engineering effort aligns with strategic goals.
- React decisively to change by re-planning, re-prioritizing, and re-staffing as business priorities shift.
Hiring & Collaboration
- Own hiring for your team: interview thoughtfully, decide quickly, and maintain high standards.
- Recruit, coach, and make necessary performance calls against team standards.
- Operate as a role model for other engineering managers by sharing operating models and mentoring peers.
- Communicate clearly upwards (leadership context and escalations), downwards (empowering senior engineers), and sideways (cross-functional alignment with Product, Design, GTM, and CS).
Qualifications
- 10+ years of engineering experience, including 4+ years in engineering management roles where you actively coded as part of your responsibilities.
- Hands-on experience building cloud-based SaaS products, running services in production on Azure (and ideally additionally AWS/GCP), and owning availability, cost, and customer surface.
- Strong background in understanding and leading teams in the FinOps space.
- API-first mindset: building products fully functional and available through APIs for both human and agentic interaction.
- Engineering management experience with multi-disciplinary teams, including full-stack and data engineers.
- Proven track record of transforming engineering teams with measurable improvements in velocity, quality, or caliber.
- Deep technical fluency in your team's primary stack (ability to read, write, and review code at a senior level).
- Strong opinions on high-performing engineering operations, hiring, coaching, performance management, and technical decision-making.
- Excellent judgment under pressure and direct, candid communication skills.
Bonus Points
- Strong Golang knowledge or experience.
- An established AI-augmented workflow with experience applying AI tools and agentic workflows to raise velocity and quality.
- Hands-on experience with multiple cloud providers.
- Background in scaling teams, processes, or technical systems through organizational growth.
