About Render
At Render, we’re building the modern cloud platform for developers creating AI-native, full-stack, multi-service applications. Our mission is to eliminate the tradeoff between the power of hyperscalers and the simplicity of developer-friendly platforms.
About the Role
We're looking for a software engineer with a strong identity and security focus to join our Expansion team. You'll build the authentication, authorization, and access-management primitives that Render's customers depend on, including SSO, RBAC, audit logging, scoped credentials, and SCIM provisioning.
This is not a security operations or compliance role. You'll own changes across Render's platform and ensure security features feel built-in, not bolted on.
What You'll Do
- Design and ship authentication and authorization systems for users, agents, and services.
- Evolve Render's authorization model toward clear permissions and scopes for applications, environments, and projects.
- Own the security experience across the stack, from management interfaces to APIs and data models.
- Build controls and audit trails for defining and enforcing how people, services, and agents act within systems.
- Design shared auth APIs and drive adoption across Product, Design, and Security teams.
- Operate auth systems, including observability, safe rollouts, incident response, and on-call.
What We're Looking For
- 6+ years of experience shipping and operating production systems.
- Experience building customer-facing authentication or authorization features.
- Ability to design systems where correctness, availability, and safe rollout are critical.
- Strong balance of security and product tradeoffs; understanding of when a simpler design is sufficient.
- Track record of taking ambiguous projects from design through production.
Nice-to-haves
- Hands-on experience with OAuth, OpenID Connect, SAML, SCIM, JWTs, or other auth methods.
- Experience with multi-tenant authorization models (RBAC, ABAC, ReBAC).
- Experience with workload identity, secrets management, or privileged access.
- Familiarity with compliance frameworks like SOC 2 or ISO 27001.
Benefits
- 4 weeks of paid vacation.
- 14 weeks of fully paid parental leave.
- 100% employer-paid medical; 99% dental and vision coverage.
- Long-term disability, life insurance, and 401K plans.
- Monthly lifestyle, cell phone, and internet stipends.
- Continuous learning benefits.
