Staff Backend Engineer, Commerce - Zapier

About the Role

Zapier is looking for a Staff Backend Engineer to own the technical vision and long-term architecture for our Commerce Zone. You will define the pricing primitives, service boundaries, and data models that power our billing, subscriptions, payments, and entitlements infrastructure.

This is a production-critical, finance-grade role where you will drive alignment across Product, Engineering, Finance, and Sales to ensure our monetization systems are scalable, accurate, and extensible.

What You’ll Do

• Technical Leadership: Partner with leadership to shape the strategy and roadmap for the Commerce Zone.
• Architectural Vision: Define the long-term platform vision, balancing near-term delivery with system durability and operational excellence.
• High-Impact Initiatives: Lead projects to decouple billing from account systems, consolidate pricing infrastructure, and enable rapid experimentation.
• System Ownership: Ensure resilience and correctness across Billing, Pricing, Payments, and Checkout systems.
• Cross-Team Collaboration: Work with cross-functional partners to drive ARR growth and improve the customer monetization journey.
• Mentorship: Raise the technical bar by conducting code reviews, sharing patterns, and mentoring engineers.

About You

• Proven Impact: Experience driving outcomes in complex, large-scale production systems.
• Domain Expertise: Strong background in billing systems, subscription management, payment processing, or financial platforms.
• Technical Depth: Expertise in API design, performance optimization, database scaling, and navigating mature monoliths.
• Outcome-Driven: You focus on solving customer problems and delivering measurable business results.
• Leadership: Ability to lead initiatives across multiple teams, surface risks, and align stakeholders.
• AI Fluency: Practical experience using AI coding tools with a clear understanding of where human judgment is required in high-correctness domains.
