We are seeking a Senior Accountant, Tax to join our dynamic tax team. Reporting to the Director of Tax, this role will be instrumental in managing tax provision, compliance, and reporting operations. You will play a key role in maintaining tax law compliance, supporting financial reporting, and optimizing our overall tax position. A significant aspect of this role involves driving process improvements and evaluating AI opportunities to enhance efficiencies. Familiarity with AI tools like Dust, Notion AI, and ChatGPT is a strong advantage, and a willingness to embrace and learn new AI technologies is a minimum requirement.

We integrate AI thoughtfully to enhance repeatable workflows while maintaining accountability for accuracy, confidentiality, and controls, allowing us to focus on judgment, strategic partnerships, and business outcomes.
This is a remote opportunity within Canada and the United States.
What We're Looking For:
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in corporate tax provision and tax compliance (federal & state/provincial) within a public accounting firm and/or corporate tax department.
- CPA designation strongly preferred, with robust technical knowledge of US and Canadian income tax laws and regulations (federal, provincial, state, and local).
- Strong technical knowledge of US GAAP tax accounting rules (ASC 740).
- Experience with Estimated Annual Effective Tax Rate (AETR) provision reporting.
- Exposure and experience with Canadian tax issues are preferred.
- Technological proficiency in reporting and compliance tools, including NetSuite and income tax compliance software such as OneSource.
- Advanced Excel skills, including pivot tables, SUMIFS, VLOOKUPs, and INDEX formulas.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively across functions.
- Effective communication skills to convey complex tax issues clearly to internal and external stakeholders.
- Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple competing deadlines.
- Experience with Canadian SR&ED and US R&D tax credit claims is a plus.
- A trailblazer eager to explore and leverage advanced AI technologies to enhance work tasks.
What You Can Expect:
You will be part of a global tax team, contributing to US, Canadian, and International tax matters.
Tax Reporting
- Prepare quarterly tax provisions using the AETR method, tax balance sheet account reconciliations, quantification of uncertain tax positions, financial statement disclosures, and related analysis for all legal entities, ensuring US GAAP compliance.
- Review schedules prepared by the accounting department that serve as inputs for the tax provision.
- Assist the Director of Tax and Senior Director of Tax in our partnership with external tax consultants to calculate the year-end provision, including permanent and temporary book-to-tax differences.
- Maintain and reconcile tax-related accounts during the accounting close process.
- Assist in preparing tax accounting memos to document analysis and conclusions for complex transactions.
- Provide audit support to the accounting team during year-end audits.
- Support the budget process and quarterly forecasts of tax estimates, preparing comparative and other analyses.
- Proactively identify, research, and formulate recommendations on tax positions, accounting issues, and risk management, presenting proposals to the Director of Tax and/or Senior Director of Tax for approval.
Tax Compliance
- Prepare and review income tax returns (federal, state, provincial, and local), ensuring timely filing of all compliance obligations for all legal entities, with a view to bringing some tax returns in-house.
- Prepare apportionment data and supporting documentation.
- Prepare estimated tax payment calculations and installments for processing and approval.
- Assist in resolving notices and inquiries from tax authorities.
- Coordinate and manage tax audits conducted by regulatory authorities.
- Monitor changes in tax legislation and assess their impact on the organization’s tax compliance.
- Manage state and local tax compliance, including sales and use taxes and other regulatory returns.
- Ensure transfer pricing policies and documentation are current, consistently applied, and compliant with regulations.
- Prepare quarterly PFIC calculations.
Tax Strategy and Planning
- Assist in special projects, including tax planning and analysis of income tax consequences for non-standard transactions and cross-functional business initiatives.
- Lead special tax projects and collaborate closely with business partners on customer tax queries, state/local government tax incentives, etc.
- Assist in performing tax due diligence procedures and work with external advisors on tax-related items for mergers and acquisitions.
USA-based roles: The annual base salary for this role is between $97,000 USD and $136,000 USD, plus immediate participation in 1Password's benefits program (health, dental, 401k, and many others), utilization of our generous paid time off, an equity grant, and, where applicable, participation in our incentive programs.
Canada-based roles: The annual base salary for this role is between $93,000 CAD and $130,000 CAD, plus immediate participation in 1Password’s generous benefits program (health, dental, RRSP, and many others), utilization of our generous paid time off, an equity grant, and, where applicable, participation in our incentive programs.
